Humane Societies, including Suncoast Humane Society, encourage potential pet adopters to introduce their new pet to new surroundings before the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Even then it still can be a hectic time for pets and their human families. Some time ago I dusted off an old poem I had found and played around with the words and the rhymes until I thought it had a more meaningful message.  If you are a pet owner, my guess is that you will relate to this poem. Did I guess correctly?

It was the night before Christmas
and all through the house,
a puppy is squeaking
an old rubber mouse.

The wreath which was merrily
hung on the door,
now lies in pieces
all over the floor.

The stockings that hung
in a neat little row
now boast large holes
in each of the toes.

The tree was subjected
to bright colored whims,
although still splendid
is missing some limbs.

I catch him and scold him
“Be good”, I insist.
But he scampers off
to see what he’s missed.

And now as I watch him
the thought comes to me.
This puppy’s the spirit
that Christmas should be.

For children and puppies
can show us the way,
and teach us the joy
that comes with this day.

For they share a message
that comes from above
and serves to remind us

From those that cannot speak for themselves, Merry Christmas!
