Dawn a 1 year old Chihuahua needing a foster home while she waits for surgery.
Hey, I’m Dawn! I’m a 1 year old Chihuahua who is in need of a foster home while I await surgery on June 17!

As an open admissions shelter, we accept all pets surrendered to us from our service area, regardless of health, size, breed, or temperament. Because of this, some pets need special care in order to become available for adoption.

A variety of health issues present themselves once our trained, knowledgeable staff performs wellness checks on all the pets that come to their animal care center. When appropriate and at all possible, our staff places these pets with health issues with a caring volunteer foster parent. If you have the time and love in your heart, you can help a pet in need!

If you are unable to foster at this time, we have a Shelter Angel fund exclusively for pets that need special medical care. You can donate to the special fund by designating your monetary donation as a “Shelter Angel” donation.

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent to help homeless pets, please contact Jacqueline Elliott, Events and Volunteer Manager for Suncoast Humane Society, by phone at 941-474-7884 or by email at

Hi, I’m Trixie! They say I’m a 5 year old American Pit Bull Terrier who sports a brindle colored coat. I came to Suncoast Humane Society because my family was moving. After some tests, the vet told me I was heartworm positive and need treatment for the next 3 months. That means if no one can foster me, I will have to sit in a kennel for that long. Now, does that sound like fun to you? I don’t think so! That’s where you come in. I know you might not be looking for a long term commitment and that’s okay. I just need a companion that is willing to nurse me back to good health so I can find a forever home. I’ve shared the company of men, women, kids, and another dog and I enjoyed everyone. I’m house broken and a very good listener. I can be a bit of a goof ball but its all out of fun. You can easily win my affection by giving me chew toys and playing fetch. But after all the fun and games are over, I hope it’s okay to use your lap as a place to rest. If you think you’re the right fit for the job, then I’m the foster for you! Cal20150614H The names Cal. Nice to meet you! I’m a 1 year old Terrier mix who is looking for a short term commitment. I recently came to Suncoast Humane Society but found out quickly that I need to be treated for heartworm disease. This requires me to be in a foster home for a minimum of two months. So now, I’m looking for someone who is willing to open their home up to a friendly guy like me! I will need lots of rest and for you to walk me on a leash only. If you decide to foster me, I come fully loaded with kisses 🙂 Delilah20150624H Hey there, it’s Delilah! I’m a beautiful 3 year old American Pit Bull Terrier who loves to cuddle! I am heartworm positive and in need of a two month commitment that will require lots of rest and leash walking only. Easy enough right? If you aren’t sold yet let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve lived with another dog and cats, have been around many children, and got along well with everybody. I’m housebroken and I walk great on a leash. I do very well at bath time and I have good manners. I enjoy going for car rides and playing fetch. Squeaky toys and chew bones are my favorite! There is one last thing you should know before I go. Storms make me a little nervous so if you don’t mind I’d like to stay close and maybe even cuddle it out. Becoming a foster parent is a very rewarding opportunity and if you’re interested in helping me become adoptable again it might just be the best decision you’ve ever made! Dodge20150623H Hello, it’s Dodge here. I’m a happy-go-lucky 5 year old English Bulldog mix who loves getting attention! I came to Suncoast Humane Society with Delilah and I’m also being treated for heartworm disease. This is why I’m looking for a foster parent who can make a short term commitment of 2 months. I will need lots of rest and leash walking only. I am very friendly but I must admit that I get a little too excited sometimes. I’ve lived with a family that had children, as well as other dogs and cats and was great with everybody. Remember how I said I get a little too excited sometimes? Yeah, well Rabbits can be the cause of that excitement. I love to play a game of tag with them and I thought they liked it too but I guess not. So, no more rabbit games for me. Just like Delilah, I also get nervous during storms so I might turn into your shadow for a few hours if you don’t mind. As you can see, I’m a little bit of a wimp when it comes to loud noises and I tend to bark when I’m scared. I hope that won’t discourage you from fostering me! I promise we’ll have a doggy good time together 🙂
