A Puerto Rico Dog Rescue Mission Made Pawsible

Animal rescues are faced with missteps and occasional mayhem. Wednesday night was both for many dogs and cats rescued from Puerto Rico en route to Miami, Florida. Several animal welfare organizations from across the nation traveled to Miami International Airport ready to help 300 animals find forever homes.
We rented a climate-controlled truck, gathered donated crates, adjusted staffing patterns, and sent a team of three prepared to help 50 dogs from Puerto Rico. After an extended delay, when the animals finally arrived, it was apparent that some rescue organizations weren’t going to receive the amount of animals they expected to take in.
Out of all the animals that were flown in, our team happily returned to Englewood with one frightened dog with a limp, who was originally found leashed to a fence in the streets of Puerto Rico.
No one was interested in him.
Suncoast Humane Society is used to embracing the unwanted; the last of the litter, so to speak. There was no way, after making such a brave journey, he was going to get left behind again. As a single passenger in a 26-foot truck, we brought our island guy home Thursday morning.
We had called upon the community to come together to help give him a name. The SHS Nation came out in full force and it’s now official… Our precious pure island mutt’s new name is RICO! This name was chosen through an overwhelming amount of suggestions and votes, and was by far the most popular choice among our community.
There are still a few unknowns regarding his medical needs. He tested high positive for Heartworm disease and is scheduled for X-rays of his right leg/shoulder. He is going to need extensive care, and we are fully prepared and committed to help Rico.
Our community has proven time and time again that we can help save animals’ lives when we all come together, and Rico needs us right now more than ever.

July 24 Update

Great news everyone! Rico’s X-rays determined that his limp is due to a very old injury that didn’t heal properly. Today Rico had his neuter surgery, and he is recovering well! He was just waking up from anesthesia and was a bit sleepy still. The next step for Rico is Heartworm treatment and lots of rest and TLC.

Thank you all for keeping Rico in your thoughts and for donating to his care. Your gifts are making his treatment pawsible!! Rico’s medical care is still in progress, please continue to donate if you can. If you would like to send Rico a love note or a get well card, our mailing address is: Suncoast Humane Society, Attention: Rico, 6781 San Casa Drive, Englewood, FL 34224. #puertoricorescue #missionpawsible

August 1 Update

Rico got his mircochip, a nail trim, and started his Heartworm treatment! But, more importantly, Rico is now officially ready for his forever family and home! He will need a low-key, quiet environment where he can let his heart rest while he heals from Heartworm disease and lots of TLC! Despite everything that Rico’s been through, nothing gets him down. He’s full of joy and love, and he is more than ready to share it with someone right now!
