About Us

Suncoast Humane Society is a Regional no-kill animal welfare organization, founded in 1971.

Our program and services include: adoptions, low-cost preventive health care, animal enrichment, Pet Therapy, Foster Care, Lost and Found, Dog Obedience Training, Community Pet Food Bank, Humane Education and Outreach, Shelter Angel Medical Fund, Volunteer Opportunities, Disaster Resources, Fospice, and more; all aimed to create and support a no-kill community.

We serve Southwest Florida including Charlotte and Sarasota Counties, Boca Grande and beyond. Our shelter helps more than 50,000 animals and people each year.

Our Mission is to encourage, honor and support the human-animal bond in the Suncoast Region of Florida. Our Vision is to celebrate a community whose pets are safe, protected, and loved.

How We Do It

Suncoast Humane Society loves and tends to those pets with no-one else to care for them, regardless of their health, temperament, age, size, or breed. We show up for the underdogs, cats, and small critters. We love them all.

We do this by providing innovative programs through Sheltering, Prevention and Community Outreach aimed to care for pets and the people who love them.

Through our bricks-and-mortar shelter, foster families, and Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS). The shelter is the LAST option, and is not the best one. Our work demands ongoing judgement, and we may be able to offer solutions that do not require shelter surrender.

Through our low-cost spay/neuter, vaccinations and other preventive care to prevent pet overpopulation and illness.

Community Outreach

By implementing programs and services that respond to community needs including: pet therapy, pet food bank, behavior training, and creative initiatives to positively influence the human-animal bond.

An Important Mission with Humble Beginnings

Founded in 1971 by a group of compassionate people, the Animal Aid Society of Englewood began operations as a small shelter with a few cages to care for homeless animals. The Englewood area, along with the entire nation, experienced a pet over-population crisis that challenged our non-profit organization to grow to meet the needs. Expansions to the shelter occurred, with the latest completed in 1997. Over time our service area expanded and is now Charlotte County, Sarasota County, the Boca Grande portion of Lee County and beyond. To more accurately reflect the areas we serve, the name was changed to Suncoast Humane Society.
